Eduplace was established in 1996 as a niche recruitment agency with a single focus — place the right educators in the right environments. Not the most. The right ones.
We saw a gap in the market that nobody was filling with care. Schools needed qualified teachers they could trust. Teachers needed an agency they could trust. The transaction in the middle — placement — was being handled poorly by people who didn't understand education.
We understood both sides. That understanding is what has kept us in this industry for nearly three decades.
We are not a large agency. We have never tried to be. Boutique by choice — because quality placement requires personal attention. We know the educators we represent. We know the schools we work with. That relationship is what makes the difference between a placement that works and one that doesn't.
We stepped away from the South African market for a period. We're back — with the same standards, the same values, and a sharper focus on what we do best. SA teachers placed locally and internationally, with the personal attention that only a boutique agency can offer.
District Six, Cape Town
Founder — Eduplace Recruitment Agency — 1996
Robert Howard was born and raised in District Six — the vibrant, multicultural heart of Cape Town that was declared a whites-only area under apartheid and systematically demolished. Like thousands of families, Robert and his community were forcibly removed. The neighbourhood he grew up in, the streets he knew, the people he lived alongside — taken.
It shaped him. A man who had seen what it meant to have something stripped away understood better than most what it meant to build something with integrity and protect it. He carried that quietly into everything he did.
He spent his career in education — first as a teacher, then as a principal. He understood schools from the inside. The staffing challenges, the frustration of finding the right person for the right position, the impact a poorly matched teacher had on a classroom and a school community. He had lived it for years before he ever thought about solving it.
When Robert took early retirement, he did what anyone who truly loves their work does — he looked for a way to stay useful. He was not a man who could sit still. He saw a problem he understood better than most and decided to do something about it.
In 1996 he founded Eduplace. Not as a businessman entering recruitment, but as an educator who had spent years in school administration watching good schools struggle to find good teachers. He knew what schools needed. He knew what teachers deserved. And he knew the gap between the two was being filled — badly — by people who had never stood in front of a class.
He built the agency on the relationships and instincts he had developed over a lifetime in education. Every placement was personal. Every teacher he represented was someone he believed in. Every school he worked with trusted him because he spoke their language — because he had been them.
Robert passed away having built something rare — an agency with a reputation built entirely on trust and genuine understanding. We celebrate that. We carry it forward.
Eduplace has been passed on to family members who share his values and his commitment to the teachers and schools that made this agency what it is. The name, the standards, and the care he brought to every placement remain unchanged.
We are selective. Not every applicant will be the right fit for every position. What we will do is give every application genuine consideration — and be honest when the timing isn't right.

Quality over volumeWe would rather place ten teachers well than one hundred poorly. Every placement carries our name.
